Open Compute Project Foundation Expands Open Edge Ecosystem with AWS Contributions

Open Compute Project Foundation Expands Open Edge Ecosystem with AWS Contributions

On April 19th, 2023, the Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) announced that Amazon Web Services (AWS) has contributed a new edge gateway base specification to the OCP. This specification is aimed at supporting cloud-delivered managed edge services, including retail, and will also support OCP’s Switch Abstraction Layer (SAI). End-users will have a choice of Network OS including SONiC or DENT from the Linux Foundation. The hope is that this specification will act as a catalyst for the development of a new and resilient open enterprise edge computing supply chain, with participation from various ODM and OEM network equipment vendors.

The enterprise edge gateway will allow for multiple product models, which are compatible with the specification and can serve a wide range of use cases, including SD-WAN and SASE. The specification allows for gateways configured with 48 ports or 24 ports, both including 4x25Gb SFP28 Uplink Ports. The gateway can support PoE, and optionally Cellular LTE and/or 5G and/or Wi-Fi. The gateway CPU can be a pluggable module with extended computational performance to allow for demanding workloads of SD-WAN and SASE.

The OCP has been actively engaged in edge computing since the data center consolidation trend attenuated and shifted to moving computation to the edge for latency, data recency, and data sovereignty, much of this driven by the adoption of AI. The initial edge computing developments at the OCP started with the community development of the Open Edge Server and Cell Site Gateways, which is now fortified by the addition of the AWS-provided Enterprise Edge Gateway specification.

In conclusion, the expanded relationship between AWS and OCP has the potential to be a significant enterprise edge computing market accelerator, unleashing innovations that come from an open and collaborative community and benefit many market segments and geographies.

The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) announces the addition of a new edge gateway base specification contributed by AWS, aimed at developing a new and resilient open enterprise edge computing supply chain. The specification is expected to foster a vendor-agnostic supply chain for edge hardware that can be deployed in Just Walk Out technology locations and other environments. The expansion of the multi-vendor open edge ecosystem will serve many geographies in EMEA, North America, and APAC, benefiting many market segments and accelerating innovation through an open and collaborative community.

Blog: The Potential of Quantum Technologies in Computing and Networking

Quantum technologies are poised to revolutionize the computing and networking industries, unlocking new levels of speed, efficiency, and processing power. As a leader in innovative and sustainable IT infrastructure solutions, Circle B is developing hard to help companies in the future to harness the power of quantum computing and networking through the Open Compute Project (OCP).

Quantum Computing: How it Works and What it Offers

Traditional computing relies on bits, which can be either 0 or 1. Quantum computing, on the other hand, uses qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This allows for much faster processing and more complex computations.

Quantum computing could enable breakthroughs in areas such as drug discovery, cryptography, and machine learning. For example, quantum computers could simulate the behavior of molecules, which would greatly accelerate the process of developing new drugs. They could also break traditional encryption methods, which would require new, quantum-resistant algorithms to be developed.

Networking with Quantum Technologies

In addition to computing, quantum technologies are also expected to greatly improve networking. Quantum networking uses quantum entanglement, which allows two particles to be connected in a way that any change to one particle will affect the other. This could allow for secure communication that is virtually impossible to intercept or hack.

The OCP Advantage

The Open Compute Project (OCP) is an initiative started by Facebook to promote open-source hardware designs for data centers. OCP designs are optimized for high performance, scalability, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for quantum computing and networking applications.

By leveraging OCP hardware designs and working with Circle B’s team of experts, companies can take full advantage of the potential of quantum technologies while also ensuring that their IT infrastructure is sustainable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective.
